Polihale Beach, Kauai
The
Polihale Beach is located on the westernmost
end of Kauai. Being an extension of the
Barking Sands Beach, it is the longest beach
in Hawaii with a 17 mile long stretch of
beautiful white sand. The sand dunes can
reach towering heights of over a hundred
feet. The currents are can be very fierce
since the most of the beach is unprotected
from the strong winds and powerful waves.
However, there is a small portion encircled
by reef which is safe for swimming. This
area is called the Queen’s pound. It is
located on the southern portion of Polihale
Beach which is near the Barking Sands Beach.
Swimmers are warned to be extra careful
since there is no lifeguard stationed on the
beach.
Polihale Beach offers amenities including
showers, restrooms, picnic tables and clean
drinking water. It is accessible through a
dirt road, but some locals prefer to drive
on the sand. Tourists are warned from doing
this as the route is isolated and far from
civilization.
The majestic cliffs of Na Pali begin at the
Polihale Beach’s northern point where the
Polihale State Park
is also located. The
Polihae’s most distinctive archeological
feature is the heaiu, or Hawaiian temple,
located on the northern part of the beach.
