Kilauea, Kauai
Kilauea is one of the communities along the
northern shore of the beautiful and majestic
island of Kauai. It is located 25 miles away
from the Nawiliwili Harbor and the Lihue
Airport which are both the gateways through
which tourists and locals come and go.
Kilauea’s visitors may enjoy a wide array of
recreational activities including scuba
diving, golf, swimming, fishing, snorkeling,
surfing, sailing and more. Just a few
minutes away are the Princeville golf
courses and the Hanalei Bay. The Princeville
is one of the most popular and visited
resorts in Hawaii. Tourists can visit the
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, the
Hanalei Valley Lookout, and the Kilauea
Lighthouse.
Kilauea is the southeastern most and
youngest volcano on the island of Hawaii.
For many years, it was thought to be only a
satellite of the larger Mauna Loa, which is
also a volcano. However, after decades’
worth of research, scientists discovered
that the Kilauea is a separate volcano with
its own magma system that extends down over
sixty kilometers into the earth’s core.
The peak of Kilauea is on the line of
volcanoes that includes the Kohala and the
Mauna Kea.
The line does not include
the Mauna Loa.
