Hookipa Beach, Hawaii
The
Hookipa beach is known as one of the best
places for windsurfing. It is where two of
the major world class windsurfing
competitions are held. Only experts are
encouraged to surf in Hookipa Beach because
the very strong waves would overwhelm
amateurs.
The beach, however, has a coral reef that
creates a calmer pond-like area that is
perfect for relaxing dips during the early
morning when the waters are generally more
peaceful.
The services and amenities available in
Hookipa Beach include restrooms, picnic
facilitues, showers and two parking lots.
The sandy beach has a rocky shoreline which
makes for great waves for surfing in the
morning, and windsurfing in the afternoon.
The strong winds and currents, and the
seasonal high surf give the beach its
reputation as a premier windsurfing beach.
Sine the 1930s, the Hookipa beach has been
frequented by surfers and contemporary
fishing enthusiasts.
Hookipa Beach used to be a long white sand
beach, but after 1946 when a tsunami hit,
the area
became a thin strip of beach
behind a large rocky shelf.
Located on the South Shore are the beaches
of Wailea, Kihei an Makena. They are a
forty-five
minute drive away from
Hookipa, and are more suitable for swimming
than surfing.
